Female infertility

Infertility is the inability of women to get pregnant due to an abnormal condition.

Big cities are highly influencing female infertility than rural places. Female infertility is the alarming problem nowadays which has led to the high rise in a number of fertility clinic in Mumbai.

What are the threats against fertility?

Ovulation disorder – Hormonal disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome affects the release of eggs from the ovaries.  

Too much prolactin secretion – Side effects of medications taken for other diseases will lead to pituitary gland problems, which in turn cause too much of prolactin production hence leading to infertility.  

Hormonal problems – Deficiency and imbalance in hormone secretion which insists regular ovary growth and thickening of uterus lining has chances to affect pregnancy.

Uterine trouble – The presence of uterus polyps and fibroids happen when too many cells grow in the endometrium which can block the egg and sperm uniting.

Cervical abnormalities – Abnormalities in the shape and narrowing of cervix due to an inherited malformation. In some cases, the cervix cannot produce the perfect mucus to allow the sperm to travel to the uterus.

Fallopian tube damage or blockage – The tube which carries the egg from the ovary to uterus gets damaged when scars form after the pelvic infections occur due to fallopian tube inflammation and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Endometriosis – The outside growth of endometrial tissues affects the functions of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. This is the leading issue which brings complication in pregnancy.

Primary ovarian insufficiency – caused by two major mechanisms called follicle dysfunction and follicle depletion. Follicle dysfunction indicates the abnormal function of follicle still remaining in the ovary. Follicle depletion is the state where no primordial follicle remains in the ovary.

Pelvic adhesions – Adhesions are infections caused by Cesarean sections or other open surgery Scar tissue can grow between two organs in the pelvic area and cause significant pelvic pain.

Treatment and techniques to gain fertility

Surrogacy – The surrogate mother is a woman who gets inseminated with the sperm and carries the baby on behalf of the mother and delivers the baby.

Egg donation – Eggs are developed in another woman and then inserted to the recipient who is not able to produce eggs on her own.

Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) – Fertilized eggs are inserted into the uterus of the mother within 24 hrs after IVF.

Gamet intrafallopian tube transfer (GIFT) – the sperm and eggs are mixed before insertion.
