How to Prep Your Skin for Any Hair Removal Treatment

1. Start with Clean Skin

The first step for any hair removal treatment is to make sure the area is clean. This might seem obvious, but it’s something a lot of people skip or rush through. Use a gentle cleanser to remove any sweat, oil, or product buildup (like lotion or deodorant). These can create a wall between your skin and the wax, razor, or laser, and can even increase your risk of irritation.

4. Trim, Don’t Shave—If You’re Waxing

  • Discontinue any retinoids or exfoliating acids (like AHAs, BHAs, or tretinoin) on the treatment area at least 3–5 days before your session. These products can make your skin more sensitive.
  • Shave the area you’re getting lasered 24 hours before your appointment. Unlike waxing, laser needs the hair root intact but no hair above the skin surface. Shaving is ideal because it leaves the follicle in place but removes the surface hair.

Your provider should also give you personalized prep instructions based on your skin tone and hair type, so follow those carefully.

6. Skip the Gym, Sauna, and Tight Clothing Afterward

While this is more post-treatment than prep, it’s still worth mentioning. After waxing or laser hair removal, your skin is more sensitive and your pores are open. Sweating too soon after can cause irritation or even breakouts.

Avoid:

  • Working out
  • Hot tubs or saunas
  • Tight clothing that can rub the area

Give your skin at least 24 hours to chill. If you do need to go out, wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid synthetic fabrics.

7. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol Before Appointments

Caffeine and alcohol make your skin have more of a reaction, which may result in more discomfort during waxing or laser treatments. If possible, try to avoid these at least 4–6 hours before your session.
